Song tfor Mallika

Looks like Bollywood bombshell Mallika Sherawat has taken the Los Angeles party circuit by storm.

After a Los Angeles milkshake bar earlier named one of its milkshakes after her, now R&B superstar Usher has decided to dedicate one of his songs to the glam doll. Mallika, who is in Los Angeles working on her first Hollywood project titled Hisss, met the singer at a shop and found him handsome. “Met Usher at LA’s Best Brunch! He’s very handsome. Oh My God! Usher’s promised to dedicate a song to me,” the actress wrote on her micro-blogging page.

Sania Mirza to marry Shoaib Malik

It’s a match across borders and sports, as one of India’s top tennis players Sania Mirza will be getting married to Shoaib Mailk, the former cricket captain of Pakistan. The news has been confirmed by Sania’s father, Imran Mirza. He has also said that after the marriage, the couple will be based in Dubai.

It seems that there will be no engagement ceremony for the two, and that they will get married in April. It is believed that the wedding will happen in India while the reception will be held in Pakistan.

Just a few months ago, Sania broke off her engagement to her family friend Sohrab Mirza. It is believed that Sania and Shoaib have been seeing each other since. Apparently, the match was made formal when Shoaib’s mother met Sania’s parents in India.

Sania reportedly said yesterday that it was the biggest day of her life.

In the past, Shoaib was linked to an Indian woman called Ayesha Siddiqui and there were even rumours that he had married her. But now it seems like he has found his perfect match in Sania Mirza. Shoaib has said that he will support Sania in her career for as long as she wants to play.

Munnabhai Chale Amerika

Just when all Munnabhai fans had given up any hope of seeing the much promised third installment in the series, news comes in that Munnabhai Chale Amreeka is very much in the pipeline. The filming will begin at the end of the year.

Munnabhai Chale Amreeka is very much on the cards. Raju has been working on the script, and we should begin filming soon” confirms Munnabhai, Sanjay Dutt, himself.

Arshad Warsi, who is currently enjoying the success of his first production Hum Tum Aur Ghost, is equally optimistic of doing the film. “Raju has been working on the story and screenplay for some time now. We all know how Raju works, and he needs the story to be just right. We didn’t want to make the sequel just to cash in on the Munnabhai success. We want to make a good and equally enjoyable film,” explains Arshad.

But what has delayed the film for so many years?
“The film, as the name suggests, is set in the US. Now, many films have been made with the whole New York and 9/11 incident in the background. A lot of them were being filmed or released during the time Raju was writing the script. Plus 3 Idiots also happened for Raju. So, for a good year and a half, he was completely immersed in that project. He has now gone back to the writing board and is re-working the script… putting final touches to it,” says Warsi.

Abhay Deol says Stop cruelty against Bears

By Bollywood Hungama News Network

Abhay Deol The very utterance of Abhay Deol brings to your minds synonyms like 'Mr. Cool' 'Dude', 'Suave' etc… to name a few. Well, there is one more 'tag' that's attached now to his name, and that is 'Mr. Caring'. And vouching for this will be none other than the bears all over.

Even though the bears are synonymous and famous for their hugs and their hair (for medicinal purposes), the flip side of the coin is the tremendous pressures that these hapless animals are subjected to. That's exactly the point that Abhay wants to make. As a part 'Wildlife S.O.S', an NGO that works towards the animals' welfare, Abhay strongly wants the bears that are subjected to dance on the streets for the sake of earning money to be called off, since it involves lots of cruelty. As a part of his 'duty' as the brand ambassador for the same, Abhay has taken the cause to the national level and wants to request everyone to pay that extra attention towards these innocent creatures.

How Sendhil Ramarthy was cast in It's A Wonderful Afterlife

By Bollywood Hungama News Network

Sendhil Ramamurthy The tall, dark and handsome hunk from American series 'Heroes', Sendhil Ramamurthy, is making heads turn even before the first look of Gurinder Chadha's It's A Wonderful Afterlife has been revealed in India.

The LA-based actor, who was recently cast as a CIA agent in the noted US spy drama Covert Affairs opposite Piper Perabo, was approached by Chadha in December 2008 to meet for the role of Raj, opposite British-Indian debutant, Goldy Notay, who plays Roopie.

"Sendhil flew to London and we had lunch," informs Chadha. "He said he was determined to be in one of my films and happily he was perfect for the role; a good-looking out of towner who has not been in touch with Roopie and her family for a while. Sendhil was great on set, extremely disciplined and conscientious, and he made many a female heart flutter when he did a take - and some guys too!" she laughs.

Remarks Sendhil, "I had some time off between Season 3 and 4 of 'Heroes' and that's exactly when Gurinder was shooting for Afterlife. She's very good with her actors and the film gave me the opportunity of doing something light and different from Suresh in 'Heroes'."

Ramamurthy will attend the London premiere of It's A Wonderful Life on April 12, accompanied by his British wife and actress, Olga Sosnowska. The keenly awaited comedy, also starring Shabana Azmi, Sanjeev Bhaskar and Sally Hawkins in key roles, releases in the UK on April 21 and in India and Pakistan on May 7. It is an Indian Films and Bend It Films presentation in association with Studio 18.

Yes, I do lose my temper - Nana Patekar

By Taran Adarsh

Nana Patekar Nana Patekar is well aware that people are scared of him. His reputation - an angry man, off screen - precedes him. "Yes, I am aware that people feel Nana jhagda karta hain, chillata hain, but I won't say it's untrue. I do fight, I do have arguments, but it's for the betterment of the film. I have nothing against any individual," Nana tells me.

In fact, when Nana congratulated Naseeruddin Shah for his performance in A WEDNESDAY, Naseer caught him by surprise by divulging that he [Naseer] had, in fact, recommended Nana's name for the role that Naseer eventually enacted in the film, but the makers were scared of Nana's reputation, which resulted in Anupam Kher being cast instead.

Nana has some interesting movies lined up this year and also looks forward to start his next film as a director. "It's set in the 1940s and is a love story," Nana says. Reportedly, the actor had approached Deepika Padukone to enact a pivotal role in the film, but she declined the offer. Reportedly, Nana is upset with Deepika for refusing his film. "Please don't buy this story. Haven't I refused so many films? So why should I get upset if Deepika declines my project? I don't hold grudges against anyone," Nana sets the record straight.

Nana breaks into a big smile as we discuss his son, Malhar, who will assist him in his project and who also plans to direct a film independently. "He's an obedient boy. He wants to do things on his own, without taking the easy route or using my name. I am really proud of him," the glow on Nana's face says it all.

Asin to star opposite Salman Khan in Ready

By Subhash K. Jha

Asin
It's confirmed. Asin it is, as Salman Khan's leading lady in Anees Bazmee's remake of the Telugu hit Ready.

And it was never Deepika Padukone, as reported in a section of the press. "Asin plays the lead. I wonder where Deepika's name came from!," says director Bazmee currently preparing for a month-long shooting of his new film Thank You in Canada.

Anees also denies the story that Salman asked him to sign Asin. "The role requires a 'chulbuli', vivacious, talkative and agile girl. Asin was the natural choice."

Asin had played a similar role in Ghajini. That's the role that convinced Anees that Asin was the right choice for Ready.

In fact Genelia D'Souza, the first choice for all 'chulbuli' vivacious-girl parts, was working with Anees Bazmee in yet another remake Its My Life (original Telugu film Bommarillu). Genelia was Anees natural choice.

Having failed to play something different in London Dreams, Asin is back to doing the Ghajini
act again viva la vivacious!

Priyadarshan Garam Hawa now re-titled as Aakrosh

By Subhash K. Jha

Priyadarshan, Ajay Devgn The prolific Priyadarshan has had more than his share of title problems with his new Ajay Devgn-Akshaye Khanna-Bipasha Basu starrer. A hard-hitting film about love across caste barriers and honour killing set in Bihar, Priyan wanted to call it Ishqana. But Ishqiya came along and Priyan chose Garam Hawa.

But now that title too had to be hastily abandoned and Priyan has called his film Aakrosh. Explains the exhausted director, "We wanted to call it Garam Hawa as homage to M.S. Sathyu's classic film of that name. But then Mr. Sathyu got very upset. We received a letter from him questioning our right to use his title. We immediately abandoned Garam Hawa. In order to use Aakrosh as the title, we got the original Aakrosh's director Govind Nihalani's permission. He was very generous about it."

Of late, Priyan has been working over-time. "I need a break. I've four films this year. Aakrosh and Khatta Meetha are almost complete. Then I'm going into a film about the loves and lusts of the youth for which I want to cast newcomers along with Prateik Babbar. I'm starting this film in July. Finally, I want to make my realistic no-frills film on AIDS at the end of this year with Aamir Khan in the lead. I'll go to him only when my script is ready."

Priyan says he needs a star like Aamir to have a large receptive audience for the AIDS film. "I'm more successfully known for my comedies in the North. However, even if Aamir declines, I'll still go ahead with the AIDS film."

Sridevi to endorse Vanish washing powder

By Satish Sundaresan

Sridevi For all those who thought that if Anil Kapoor vanished in reel life in Mr. India, Sridevi did the same vanishing trick in real life, here's a piece of news that will really sound music to your ears!

After having ruled and reigned over everyone's hearts alike with her performances in the silver screen as well as giving a zillion FMCG products an image makeover ( read 'endorsing') the Queen Bee is back yet again...not to vanish this time round, but to endorse Vanish washing powder. Sources close to Bollywood Hungama confirmed the news saying, "It took slightly larger-than-usual time for the ad director to convince Sridevi to sign on the dotted line. But, once she was convinced then there was not looking back! She went all out to shoot for the ad and extended her full co-operation, something that she has always been known for".

Repeated attempts to contact Sridevi proved futile.

Vidya Balan smooches Arshan Warsi

Bollywood Gossip : Bollywood Actress Vidya Balan is back in a de-glam role with Vishal Bhardwaj’s ‘Ishqiya’. Going by the trailers, she is playing a simple village belle but has tried some ‘bold’ scenes too. She is featured to be doing steamy scenes with Arshad Warsi and also rumoured to play darker shades. Her ‘desi-giri’ includes swearing in pure Hindi, conning Arshad and Naseeruddin Shah by batting those pretty eye lashes like a true ‘gaon ki gori’ and then even not minding rendering a hot smooch onscreen!

Vidya’s kissing spree continues after the Bollywood Movie ‘Guru’. She had no qualms locking lips with R Madhavan in the film. Recently, she did a very long and intimate scene with Arshad Warsi and kissed him very comfortably in ‘Ishqiya’. The scene in question has a hot kiss, and is very essential to set the tempo. “Why wouldn’t I do that scene when the bound script which was given to me before the film went on the floors? I had no issues doing the kissing scene,” Vidya Balan said.

Though there are stories that Arshad doesn’t get along with costars, it’s certainly not true when it comes to his ‘Ishqiya’ costar Vidya Balan. Arshad Warsi tells us that he fondly calls Vidya Balan Giggles. “There’s a story behind this name. Vidya laughs a lot and can’t control herself. She just goes on laughing like crazy. She doesn’t even need someone to crack a joke. Sometimes she used to start laughing in the middle of the shot and then Naseeruddin Shah and I used to wait till she finished her riot,” revealed Arshad Warsi in an exclusive Bollywood Interview.

Vidya is not apologetic about her lust

Vidya Balan is fascinated with the poetic wooing style of old-timer Naseeruddin Shah rather than wickedly funny guy Arshad Warsi in Vishal Bhardwaj’s protégé Abhishek Chaubey’s directorial debut Ishqiya. Talking about the difference in the approach of both her lovers in the movie, Vidya informs, “Arshad’s character is a typical guy for whom love is the way to get sex and Naseer saab’s character is more old school.”

She continues, “Krishna is not apologetic about her needs. She gets attracted to Arshad’s character and there is a certain culmination to it. With Naseer saab she enjoys that attention. He woos her in a classical way.”

No wonder Vidya falls for Naseeruddin Shah when he woos her with Dil toh bachcha hai ji.

Salman-Sonu fight it out for Dabangg

By Subhash K. Jha

Salman Kahn, Sonu Sood First it was Ranbir Kapoor who had his torso/abs contoured and hand-painted during Saawariya by his ever-helpful co-star Salman Khan.

Now it is Sonu Sood who got the same personal attention from Salman .While shooting the tricky bare-bodied climactic combat scene in Wai for Dabangg, Salman personally supervised his screen-adversary Sonu Sood's torso tanning.

Says Sonu, "Everyone knows when two guys do an action scene especially if they're bare-chested, they work out harder before the sequence to make sure each one's body is in the best shape."

Salman has not only exercised rigorously for the climactic fight but he has also made sure Sonu Sood looks his best on camera.

Says Sonu, "We've been shooting the hand-to-hand combat for a fortnight now, every day Salman has been making sure I'm as comfortable with the action director S Vijayan's instruction as he is."

He continues, "We've been shooting in the heat on a set depicting a warehouse and our fight is a free-for-all. We first combat with fists and then any weapon, instrument, hard object we can lay our hands on. .It's the most dangerous fight Salman and I have done. Salman made sure I was comfortable and as protected and safe as possible."

Best of all, the star gave Sonu Sood a lotion to highlight and contour his torso muscles.

Says Sood, "It's a suntan lotion which makes the abs glisten on camera so that your muscles look more contoured. Salman told me to apply it and my body looks better on camera than ever before."

Interestingly, Salman did the same to Ranbir Kapoor when the debutant shot the 'Jab Se Tere Naina' number in a towel for Saawariya. In fact Salman was not even required for the Saawariya song. He had nonetheless come on the sets and personally painted Ranbir's torso with the lotion before the song was shot.

That explains Ranbir's contoured torso muscles in the towel song when in fact he has a wiry physique.

Says Sonu Sood, "Unlike Ranbir who was in a towel the audience will see me and Salman like two rustic Biharis in Pyjama -kurtas. Salman plays a cop who thinks he's the unchallenged law of the region. I challenge him to a fight. We both slip off our kurtas and fight in full public view. As the fight gets more vicious the crowds are scared away .Only me and Salman are left, fighting. It's the most realistic climactic fight we've ever shot."

Hrithik debut song as singer launches on 29th March

By Taran Adarsh

Hrithik Roshan Reliance Big Pictures and Rakesh Roshan's highly-anticipated film KITES unfolds yet another surprise! KITES marks the debut of actor Hrithik Roshan as a singer on the silver screen. Priyanka Chopra will be heading to Brazil to shoot for Khatron Ke Khiladi - 3

By Subhash K. Jha

Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka Chopra would be shooting in Brazil for Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi - 3. She has never visited that part of the world. And she's all set to leave in July.

Says Priyanka excitedly, "I'm looking forward to shooting the show there. I haven't seen Brazil. So July onwards I'm going to be basking in Brazilian territory."

Says Priyanka, "I was getting a lot of television offers for the last couple of years. But the amount of time that those shows required didn't suit me. Besides nothing excited me. Fear Factor is one of my favourite shows. And it goes with my personality. I'm sporty and spontaneous. The channel didn't have to convince me much. The pay-cheque? Ah, let's say it's the cherry on the icing."

Priyanka says she will be more than up to cracking what's seen to be a male domain. "Just because I'm a girl it shouldn't be presumed that I can't enter the boys' territory. I'd do the stunts better than the boys. And cricketers are people I'm very cool with. Not that I know the cricket world that well. It will be great getting to know them."

Priyanka has her own stunts planned for Fear Factor. "All I can tell you is that the stunts this year are going to be bigger and scarier than they were on the show last year .Now we've male contestants instead of female and I've to match up to them."

Priyanka has just returned from two months in the US shooting for Anjaana Anjaani. "It was great shooting with Ranbir. It was a fun film. I enjoyed that space after doing soul-sapping parts. We've captured the US like never before."

Priyanka shoots down rumours regarding Ranbir and her. "I don't want to react to link ups. When there's something I'll react to, I will. Ranbir and I got along very well. He's good actor and a lovely person."

Co-stars are not Priyanka's top priority. "It has to be the part that excites me. That's most important. Then the set-up and finally the co-actor. So far I've been lucky. The parts that are coming to me are wonderful. It's very difficult for me to pick and choose from the ones offered. I'm really grateful to directors who see me as capable of carrying off these parts."

Priyanka Chopra Talking on her passion for tweeting, Priyanka says, "I write directly to people. Not just about my films, but also about my thoughts and feelings. People like that. I get great opinions on me as an actor and a person. Otherwise actors end up only having sycophants around them. I like having people around me who keep me grounded."

In San Francisco, Priyanka visited the Twitter headquarters. "They invited me. I was very excited to go. They were all open to ideas and exchange of thoughts. It was a nice interactive session. Am I looking at extending myself beyond acting? Well I'm an actor right now. I don't plan too much ahead. Whenever I do, God makes other, better plans for me. I do have facets to my personality that I'm discovering all the time. For me even getting to know the actor in me was a learning experience. I got to learn on the job .I've fallen, hurt myself, got up battered and bruised and moved on."

Priyanka is also looking forward to the stunts in Don 2. "But they won't be an extension of my stunts on Fear Factor. Fear Factor will be ME. For the first time people will see the real me. The real personality coming through. And that's what I fear in Fear Factor. Not the stunts. I've always done outdoor stunts whether it's bungee jumping or mountain climbing. I've an affinity to danger."

As for Saat Khoon Maaf, Priyanka says, "I accepted it for Vishal Bhardwaj. It's a role of a lifetime. And he has the confidence in me. I just plan to walk through the role in Vishal Sir's feet. And I've seven different looks for the role. The people who did the makeup in The Pirates Of The Caribbean are coming down for my looks. Yes I've already worked out a different look for each segment."

Priyanka is satisfied with her career. "I work very hard and then I leave it to God. When I went up to the President to get my National award I was choked with emotions. It was such an overwhelming experience when I was told I was one of the youngest to win in the adult category. I cried when I walked off the stage. I'm glad the jury could see my performance in Fashion in spite of the glamour and gave me the award out of all the wonderful performances during the year.

Priyanka's father released his devotional album on Saturday. "We collaborated on his shabd kirtan album with a save-the-girlchild campaign. It is a very important issue to me."

Mittal vs Mittal - Movie Review

By Taran Adarsh Editer Rating : 2/5

If you observe director Karan Razdan's body of work, you'll realize that he has, quite often, made women-centric movies that defy stereotype...
  • HAWAS looked at a philandering housewife, who seeks sex outside marriage;

  • GIRL FRIEND was about a lesbian, who gets overtly possessive of her girl-friend, when the latter falls in love with a guy;

  • In SOUTEN - THE OTHER WOMAN, the guy first gets into a physical relationship with a middle-aged woman and then falls in love with her step-daughter. In MITTAL V/S MITTAL, Razdan highlights marital rape, which is a reality.

It's the subject material of MITTAL V/S MITTAL that takes you by surprise, especially the sequences where the husband commits marital rape, night after night. In the past, MATRUBHOOMI, DAMAN and PROVOKED have tackled similar issues. While MITTAL V/S MITTAL makes a sincere effort to be an eye-opener, it loses focus midway after it gets formulaic.

At best, MITTAL V/S MITTAL is a solid idea that doesn't come across as strongly on celluloid.

Mitali [Rituparna Sengupta], a successful model, has dreams of marrying the prince of her dreams. She meets Karan Mittal [Rohit Roy], the heir to one of the richest families in the country. Mitali's simple, middle-class upbringing is in complete contrast to Karan's super-brat lifestyle.

Smitten by Mitali, Karan lands up at Mitali's home with his parents [Amar Talwar, Dolly Thakore] with a marriage proposal. Delighted at their daughter's luck, Mitali's family [Anjan Srivastava, Reema Lagoo] approves of the match. The marriage is solemnized.

But Mitali's dreams turn into her worst nightmare. Her mother-in-law detests her and creates misunderstandings between Karan and her. Karan turns out to be a puppet in his mother's hands and her father-in-law is a helpless, mute spectator. Karan has a certain pattern of dealing with women and wants to subdue Mitali's independent streak. Karan is, in fact, a violent monster at night within the privacy of their bedroom.

Unable to bear the humiliation and pain after she is repeatedly raped by him, Mitali decides to take charge of her life. Mitali walks out of Karan's home, hires a lawyer [Suchitra Krishnamoorthi] and files a case against her husband. Karan retaliates by hiring the best lawyer [Gulshan Grover] money can buy to fight on his behalf.

Issue-based films highlighting problems faced by women have often made their way on the Hindi screen. The issue - domestic violence - is a reality today, although women, generally, prefer to keep mum rather than raise a voice or move court for justice.

Razdan's above-named movies have had generous doses of skin show and MITTAL V/S MITTAL has it as well. In fact, the sequences featuring marital rape create the maximum impression in the film. But one would've expected really strong courtroom sequences as follow up [remember B.R. Chopra's INSAAF KA TARAZU?], but the drama that ensues doesn't create that impression. Yet, the clash between Gulshan and Suchitra in the courtroom is engrossing at times.

There's an important sequence in the film, which has a woman complaining to the activists about the atrocities committed by her husband. Strangely, Razdan has used English language to explain those atrocities, which will hardly be understood by many. Wonder why he used English? Why not Hindi? It would've reached out to a wider audience and the message would've come across strongly.

Also, he film turns formulaic in the post-interval portions. There's an item song [Hazel], there's a hidden past of the husband [Iravati Harshe] and also his mother and a few more scenes [calling both the parties for a discussion on a TV show] that are far from convincing. Why this need to resort to clichés and formulaic stuff? Ideally, it should've been a stark and gritty film on this issue.

Razdan may have had a good vision of what he wanted to make, but that's not always enough. Though there're a few songs in the narrative, the theme song that appears at various intervals has a haunting feel. Cinematography is okay.

Both Rituparna and Rohit are credible and convincing. Rituparna enacts her part with complete understanding, while Rohit surprises you with a forceful performance. Gulshan Grover and Suchitra Krishnamoorthi are powerful. Iravati Harshe is hardly there. Reema Lagoo, Anjan Srivastava and Amar Talwar are adequate. Dolly Thakore is unintentionally funny.
On the whole, MITTAL V/S MITTAL is relevant, but is bogged down by mediocrity.

Well Done Abba - Movie Review

By Taran Adarsh Editer Rating : 2.5/5

Corruption has made deep inroads in every sphere of life and Shyam Benegal focuses on it in his new endeavour WELL DONE ABBA!. Like his previous film WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR, WELL DONE ABBA! is also set in rural India and has characters you either know or observed in the course of your journey.

Adapted from 'Narsaiyyan Ki Bavdi' by Jeelani Bano, 'Phulwa Ka Pul' by Sanjeev and 'Still Waters', a screenplay treatment by Jayant Kripalani, WELL DONE ABBA! is a simple story about simple people and is told in the most simplistic manner, like all Benegal movies.

There's certain honesty about Benegal's movies and this one is no exception. It defies the stereotype and makes you smile without resorting to buffoonery. But there's a flip side too: Unwanted scenes, lethargic pace and the unending length for a waferthin storyline are three factors that go against it. In fact, it takes away from the film what was so beautifully created in its first hour. Bluntly put, the post-interval portions play a spoilsport.

When you weigh the pros and cons, WELL DONE ABBA! is an average fare from a maker who has made much better films in the past.

Armaan Ali [Boman Irani], a driver working for a Senior Executive in Mumbai, goes on leave. He wants to find a match for his teenage daughter [Minissha Lamba], who stays with his brother Rehman Ali [Boman Irani; dual role] and his wife Salma [Ila Arun]. When Armaan returns to work after three months, his young employer wants to sack him.

But Armaan Ali has a story to tell. The story he tells is a humorous account of the events and happenings that delayed him from returning after a month. He avails a government scheme to dig a well in his agricultural patch. Things spiral out of control, so much so that the government is about to collapse.

Like most Benegal movies, WELL DONE ABBA! has a story to tell with a message. Although the issue [corruption] isn't new and has been attempted in various movies before, the interesting characters and the way the story moves ahead make the effort watchable, in the first hour mainly.

But the writing goes haywire in its post-interval portions, when the 'missing' baudi becomes the topic of discussion, so much so that the government and the opposition party trade accusations and counter-accusations. These portions look farcical and are far from convincing.

Even otherwise, the story loses its sheen in this hour and the sluggish pace and unnecessary sequences only add to the woes. Just when you think that the film would conclude, a marriage song ensues, followed by a sequence in the police station. Not required, for sure!

The by-now-famous Benegal stamp is evident is several sequences. But the length and pace go against it. Shantanu Moitra's music is decent.

The casting is perfect and the performances, super. Boman Irani is the lifeline of WELL DONE ABBA!. You can't imagine any other actor enacting the part. He is incredible, handling the two roles differently and of course, impeccably. Minissha takes you by complete surprise. She's fantastic in a role that you never thought she could carry off. This film should make people notice this talented actor.

Samir Dattani is another revelation. The role gives him ample opportunity to showcase his talent and he does it with great restraint, without going overboard. The film has a number of actors in key roles, but the ones who stand out are Ila Arun [fantastic], Ravi Kishan [excellent] and Rajendra Gupta [first-rate].

On the whole, WELL DONE ABBA! has some wonderful moments, but they're few and far between. It holds appeal for a tiny sect of viewers, mainly Shyam Benegal fans.

Hum Tum Aur Ghost - Movie Review

By Taran Adarsh Editer Rating : 2/5

I've often said, interesting ideas don't necessarily translate into enthralling celluloid experiences. That's what I realized, for the umpteenth time, as HUM TUM AUR GHOST concluded.

Hollywood has attempted several films wherein the living has been shown interacting with the dead. In fact, two decades ago, there was a mad rush to Indianize GHOST [Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg]. The fascination with the dead continues to haunt Bollywood to this date.

Arshad Warsi - who has been credited with the story of HUM TUM AUR GHOST - has denied that the film is inspired by GHOST TOWN. Yet, there're some similarities and that could be coincidental. So far, so good!

Now here's the hitch. The screenplay - the lifeline of any film - is what makes a film stand on its feet and in this case, HUM TUM AUR GHOST suffers due to inept writing. Ideally, the writers and director should've come to the point right away, but the film takes its own sweet time to come to the point and what comes across is also not enticing, barring a couple of attention-grabbing moments. By then, the viewer has already lost interest in the film.

The sole saving grace is the performances by the principal cast. Sadly, that's not enough!

For Armaan [Arshad Warsi], life was picture perfect. He has a doting girlfriend Gehna [Dia Mirza] and also a great job. But there's a problem: Armaan hears voices. Voices that torture him. Voices that disturb him. More importantly, voices that nobody else can hear.

Gehna is irritated with his weird behaviour. Add to that her father [Javed Sheikh] constantly berates him for his fondness for the bottle. No one seems to understand his predicament. What puzzles everyone is the fact that he talks to himself… or rather, he talks to people, who no one can see, simply because they don't live.

Soon, Armaan becomes aware of his special ability to connect with the dead. Equipped with a will to fulfil the wishes of these spirits who hound him, Armaan sets out on a mission to help out three souls - a child, an old man and a young woman.

Generally, most Hindi movies come to the point at the very inception. HUM TUM AUR GHOST also opens its cards at the very outset, but loses focus soon after. In fact, the moment you're told that Arshad can see the dead, you expect to embark on a journey you've never embarked upon earlier. But there's hardly any movement in the story after a captivating start.

No doubt, the concept is fascinating and had the writers concentrated on tackling the three stories that Arshad chooses to solve, and without wasting time on romance-n-songs, HUM TUM AUR GHOST would've been one journey you would've never forgotten.

The build-up to the first story - a dead kid asking Arshad to help his father - is simply missing. The second story - involving Boman Irani - could've been tackled far more expertly. The entire sequence in the bank is bizarre and far from funny. In fact, you wonder, did the writers run out of ideas at this point? Of course, the sequence thereafter - between Boman and his wife [Asawari Joshi] - is touching.

The third story - of a woman in search of her son - starts off very well, but midway through this story, the moment Arshad enters his father's house, the mystery never remains a mystery. You can predict what's in store next. The culmination to the film, although well shot, doesn't make the required impact either.

Director Kabeer Kaushik was entrusted with a great idea, but his team of writers blew it up into smithereens. The impact generated by a few worthy of note sequences gets evaporated as the film reaches its culmination, primarily because the writing doesn't hold. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is strictly okay. Ashok Mehta's cinematography is of top quality.

HUM TUM AUR GHOST has skilled performances, starting with Arshad, who's likable and believable. A complete natural, this is among his finest works. It's a new Dia you get to watch in this film. Not only does she look ethereal, but is exceptional in the acting department as well. Boman is tremendous, especially in the sequence when he's meeting his wife again. Sandhya Mridul doesn't get much to do. Zehra Naqvi is convincing. Shernaz Patel is wasted. Ditto for Tinnu Anand. Javed Sheikh is as usual. Asawari Joshi is perfect for her part.
On the whole, HUM TUM AUR GHOST is a terrible waste of a terrific idea. Disappointing!

Big B gets Lifetime Achievement Award at 4th Asian Awards ceremony

By Bollywood Hungama News Network

Amitabh Bachchan There's nothing that can rightly be called as a well deserved recognition for one who dedicated his life for cinema, to cinema and with cinema. But a Lifetime Achievement Award does come close to doing just that. The legendary Amitabh Bachchan was recently awarded yet another Lifetime Achievement Award at the 4th Asian Awards ceremony in Hong Kong.

Speaking about the same on his blog, Bachchan says, "It just got over! The pride and passion and honour of a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 4th Asian Awards ceremony here at the Exhibition centre in Hong Kong."

He continues, "To be honest, I had never expected it to be the way it was - the organization, the protocol, the discipline and the efficiency, all in place and all done with great aplomb and grandeur. There is nothing quite as satisfying as a system that works. And to come across a dictum on the city of my present habitat that proclaims 'Hong Kong - the city that works!' is no off the cuff floozy remark. Tonight it demonstrated that it actually lives up to its reputation.

Thank you Hong Kong, thank you Asian Film Awards for the respect and honour that you bestowed upon me, an honour that I shall cherish and remember fondly always."

This adds yet another feather to Big B's hat.

Sajid Khan dedicates Housefull to 7 directors who inspired him

By Subhash K. Jha

Sajid Khan Sajid Khan is dedicating his second directorial venture Housefull to the seven filmmakers who have inspired him the most.

Says the excited director, "It came to me in a flash this week that there are many directors to whom I owe my career as a filmmaker. I short listed the seven directors who have made the maximum impact on me. And I'll be putting in a credit card thanking them in Housefull."

The lucky 7 are Manmohan Desai, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, K. Raghvendra Rao, K Bappaiah, Narendra Bedi, Prakash Mehra and Blake Edwards.

Says the enthusiastic director, "These are the directors who have most inspired me, provoked me into becoming a movie director. I love masala movies. And these directors made the films I can never get tired of watching. I had dedicated my first film Heyy Babyy to all the girls who agreed to make guest appearances in the title song."

Sajid is aware some names in his list of 7 would surprise people. "But I feel someone like Narendra Bedi who made Jawani Diwani and Adalat shaped our commercial cinema. Both me and my sister Farah are hardcore commercial directors."

Though Farah has started directing her film Tees Maar Khan, Sajid is keeping as far away as possible from his sister's project. "I haven't read her script. She hasn't read mine. Though we'd give our lives for one another, we're two different individuals. She is extroverted. I am more into myself. I like to spend my evenings alone at home watching films every evening."

Sajid's greatest joy these days is exchanging Bollywood trivia with Boman Irani. "Boman and Viveck Vaswani are the most knowledgeable movie people I know. Add me to the list. If Boman was not an actor I'd still be friends with him just to share movie info with him."

Salman Khan to star in Ready remake directed by Anees Bazmee

By Bollywood Hungama News Network

Salman Khan, Anees Bazmee Bollywood seems to be back to its remake trend, the current one being remaking south Indian superhits in Hindi. Anees Bazmee is doing just that with the south hit film Ready. The original Telugu film that starred Genelia and Ram will be now remade with Salman in the lead.

Speaking to Anees we learn, "Yes. I am doing the remake of the south film Ready, and have also confirmed Salman Khan to play the male lead in it. However, as for the leading ladies, I cannot speak about it now, as it's really too early and we haven't decided on it as yet."

Further he tells us, "As for the film itself, there is a long way to go as we still have to complete the scripting process since we want to retain some of the original while changing the rest to suit the Bollywood audience and hence the title as well is still awaiting to be finalized."

What about the rest of the cast of the film? "In terms of other cast members again I would say wait a little longer and all shall be revealed," signs off Bazmee.

Shaapit - Movie Review

By Taran Adarsh

Post RAAZ and 1920, you expect an enthralling horror film, with chills aplenty, from Vikram Bhatt. You presume his third horror film SHAAPIT would be even more scarier than his earlier works, mainly because Bhatt is now a seasoned player, as far as this genre is concerned.

SHAAPIT also makes a startling promise in its adverts - 'Warning: Extremely frightening'. Now that's quite a tall claim, isn't it?

Scary movies made in Bollywood, generally, have two stories rolled into one film: The past, when the wrong was committed and the present, when the past comes to haunt the young couple. Coincidentally, both RAAZ and 1920 followed this concept and so does SHAAPIT. Only this time, the story dates back to 300 + years and then comes back to the present day.

The unspoken and unwritten rule for horror films is simple: They ought to scare you at the right places and also, the culmination ought to be the best part of the story. SHAAPIT succeeds in giving you those jhatkas at several points [there are some genuinely chilling scenes] and the culmination to the tale, although a bit lengthy, keeps you involved in the proceedings.

Final word? With SHAAPIT, Vikram Bhatt raises the bar for horror films made in India. Full marks to Bhatt for making that one kick-ass horror thriller, which easily ranks amongst the best in this genre in terms of plot, setting, technique and performances. Go, get scared!
When Aman [Aditya Narayan] proposes to Kaaya [Shweta Agrawal] and as soon as Kaaya wears the engagement ring and the couple drives off together, their car takes a spin and bounces off the road, almost killing both of them.
When Kaaya's parents [Murli Sharma, Nishigandha Wad] hear about their daughter's accident, they rush to the hospital to find an engagement ring on their daughter's finger. Distraught, the father explains to the young couple that three hundred years back, their family had incurred the curse of an angry Brahmin and that curse did not allow the daughters of their family to be married.
Aman meets Pashupathi [Rahul Dev], the master of the ways of the spiritual world. Pashupathi tells Aman that in some cultures, there was a belief that a generational curse worked much after even the person who had uttered the curse was dead because, it was believed, that an evil curse when uttered stuck to an evil spirit and the spirit then became the keeper of the curse and it was the duty of that evil spirit to make the curse come true generation after generation.
Aman asks Pashupathi if there was a way to destroy the spirit and get rid of the curse. Pashupathi tells him that there was a way, but it was filled with peril. If he sets about to hunt and destroy a spirit, then the spirit would also know that it was being hunted. Aman tells Pashupathi that he would fight for his love... and so begins their journey.

Vikram Bhatt merges the past and present beautifully. The explanation offered at the very start - a spirit continues to safeguard the curse for centuries - is something that Indians, generally, would relate to.

A number of sequences bear the unmistakable stamp of this refined storyteller - Vikram Bhatt. Sample these...

  • While returning from a late-night party, Shweta watches an old woman sleeping in the middle of the road;

  • Aditya's efforts to get a particular book from the library;

  • Aditya and Shweta's encounter in a dilapidated cinema hall;

  • Shweta waking up in the middle of the night and not finding Aditya, Rahul Dev and Shubh Joshi in their respective beds;

  • The interaction with the maharaja's soul;

  • Shubh Joshi going back in time;

  • The entire climax sequence.

On the flip side, the portions depicting Shweta slipping into coma and her subsequent revival towards the end looks formulaic. Ironically, Shweta continues to wear the engagement ring in a chain [in the neck], even while in coma, which would've made it easier for the spirit to eliminate her, but it doesn't. Also, Bhatt and the writers should've established in a sequence or two about the step-wife of the king vowing to take the angry Brahmin's curse forward, since both were different stories.
Yet, despite the minor hiccups, Bhatt keeps you hooked to the proceedings. Those looking for chills, well, SHAAPIT has it in plenty. Also, his storytelling is super-stylish. Chirantan Bhatt's music is tuneful, although one misses the haunting tunes of RAAZ and 1920. The background score [Raju Rao] heightens the impact of the chills. Pravin Bhatt's camerawork is eye-filling. Dialogues [Girish Dhamija] are appropriate. The production design [Rajat Poddar] is excellent, especially the set of the palace. Special effects are amongst the best we've seen in Hindi movies. Costumes [Rahil Raja] are in sync with the demand of the characters.
Aditya Narayan is a show-stopper. It's hard to believe that someone can be so natural in front of the camera in his very first outing. Given the right roles, there's no stopping this bundle of talent. Shweta doesn't really get the scope. Besides, she is sidelined in the second hour. Rahul Dev is wonderful, underplaying his part with restraint. Newcomer Shubh Joshi oozes tremendous confidence. A fine actor! Murli Sharma and Nishigandha Wad are decent. Natasha Sinha excels.
On the whole, SHAAPIT is truly a scary movie, which comes across as a worthy follow up to RAAZ and 1920. If you are a fan of ghost stories, SHAAPIT should be on your list of 'things to do and watch' this weekend. Go for it and be prepared to be spooked!
